onBallroom dance competitions generally call for a woman’s hair to be pulled back, up and out of her face. This allows the judges to see her whole body – neck and head movements and all – as well as not be distracted by hair that is loose and swinging around.
Ballerina Bun
A ballerina bun is a classic hairstyle. To form one, pull your hair back into a ponytail right at the base of your head, directly above your neck. You can form one higher on the back of your head if you prefer, but this low bun is very similar to the ones done by ballerinas. Next, tie or wrap a neutral colored ponytail holder around the ponytail, before taking the loose part of the ponytail and wrapping it around you’re the secured section. Hold the bun in place with bobby pins or hair clips.
Chignon
A chignon is done by pulling your hair back in a ponytail like configuration. Instead of wrapping a hair band around it, pull your hair up to the top of your head and begin twirling it counterclockwise. This will cause the rest of your hair to tighten and form a chignon. Hold it in place with a series of bobby pins or other hair pins. If necessary, clip the sides in place to keep them from falling out while you move. A light coating of hair spray will also help hold your hair in place.
French Braids
Start a French braid at the top of your crown and continue it back to the base of your skull, braiding the bottom portion of your hair in a regular manner. Once the braid is complete, wrap a neutral colored ponytail holder tightly around it to hold the braid in place. If your hair is long enough, you can pull the bottom of the braid up and use it to form a circle against the back of your skull. Hold it in place with some hair pins.
